Production Safety valves stopped a day after being restarted after a two-year shutdown because of safety concerns. In restarting operations on Tuesday, workers found three valves that required repairs, a spokesman for the utility Balance Valves said. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission recently gave FirstEnergy permission to restart the plant, which closed after inspectors found that acid had eaten nearly all the way through a steel reactor lid. Without the Bellow Seal Valve problems, the spokesman said, production would have have increased to 50 percent of the 860-megawatt capacity within days.
